What Is a Registered Apprenticeship?

A Registered Apprenticeship is a structured, employer-driven training program officially recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor (USDL) or a State Apprenticeship Agency. Unlike traditional vocational training, apprenticeships combine on-the-job learning with technical instruction — and participants earn a wage from day one.

When you complete a Registered Apprenticeship, you receive a nationally recognized credential: the Certificate of Completion, sometimes called a "journey worker" credential. This certification is portable and recognized by employers across the country.

How Registered Apprenticeships Work

Every Registered Apprenticeship program has a few core components:

  1. Paid on-the-job training (OJT): Apprentices work alongside experienced mentors and learn the trade hands-on. Programs typically require between 2,000 and 10,000 hours of OJT.
  2. Related Technical Instruction (RTI): Classroom or online coursework that supplements the hands-on training, usually a minimum of 144 hours per year.
